I just watched Gervais’ Extras Christmas Special. I was so impressed with the story. I was waiting for somebody with a bit of popularity and integrity to come forward and voice an opinion on celebrity culture that would seek to rubbish and belittle the celebrity industry. Gervais also managed to show the inevitable life course that most celebrities end up having to take. “It’s either integrity and respect, or fame and fortune…”
At the end of the programme, Andy (played by Gervais) has elected to go on Celebrity Big brother, and this is the speech he gives on his opinions towards celebrity culture, having been asked if he’d go to a BB housemate’s celebrity marriage:
